Sciatica Q & A

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is not a disease, rather it is a symptom of a medical condition that is underlying. Sciatica is pain that resides in the lower back, hips, buttocks, and leg is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve. This nerve trails from your lower back down through each leg. Sciatica pain is almost always isolated in one leg. Sciatica is caused when the sciatic nerve gets pinched and is caused by spinal issues, such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or a bone spur along the spinal vertebrae. However, one could also have sciatica because of a medical condition, such as diabetes or a tumor.

What are the Most Common Symptoms of Sciatica?

The most common symptoms of sciatica include pain, inflammation, and numbness in one of the legs. One may have difficulty walking, sitting, and lying down depending on the severity of sciatica. The pain may be constant, or it will feel like a shock or jolt. Some patients will also lose control of their bowel or bladder function as a result of permanent sciatic nerve damage. One may also experience weakness or strain in the unaffected leg from overusing this leg to compensate for the sciatica pain in the affected leg.
